Beginning Teachers - New Teacher Support

Our Mission:  The mentors of Durham Public Schools aim to orient beginning teachers to the educational environment and are committed to the vision of the education profession.  We support our beginning teachers’ professional, emotion, and physical well-being by building strong, trusting relationships.  We model and encourage best practices through collaboration, professionalism, and participation in a supportive learning community.  Our goals are to improve teacher retention, accelerate beginning teacher effectiveness and enhance student achievement by supporting and encouraging our beginning teachers.

In North Carolina, beginning teachers are defined as teachers with less than three years of teaching experience and are required to participate in a Beginning Teacher Support Program for three years in order to earn the Standard Professional II license. Durham Public Schools provides an enhanced Beginning Teacher Support Program through a robust system of support that includes orientation, mentoring and professional development.
What you can expect as a beginning teacher in DPS:
  • To attend Bright Beginnings New Teacher Orientation prior to the start of the school year
  • To be assigned a peer or site-based mentor who is a veteran teacher in your school
  • To receive targeted monthly support through the monthly BT meetings at each school
  • To attend professional development that is timely and designed just for you
  • To learn the skills needed to thrive in your school environment and in our district
  • To receive feedback and participate in reflective conversations on instructional strategies, classroom management, and relationships with students and colleagues
  • To receive assistance in completing the requirements of the Beginning Teacher Support Program
