Option #1 (preferred)

Option #2 (w/principal’s approval*)

  • Attend the equivalent of three 3-hour face-to-face sessions (one per quarter) (.9 CEU)
  • Complete one hour of independent study/application (.1 CEU)
  • Complete two online sessions of writing course in Scholastic U (Nextpert®) (1.0 CEU)
*Literacy-based sessions qualify for required reading CEU’s

Total = 2.0 CEUs (may qualify for literacy CEUs for non-mathematics teachers)

Sessions will be offered at a variety of times (i.e., teacher workdays, after school, Saturdays, and during regular schools days).  Teachers and other participating instructional staff should choose the times that work best for their own personal schedules, but EVERY teacher must attend all three sessions, if they choose the face-to-face option. 

 

Complete the pretest, 8 sessions, and a post-test of an online course in Scholastic U (Nextpert®); each course session requires the following:

  • Research
  • Journaling
  • Written assessment/questions to answer 

CEU total varies depending on course(s) as follows:

Secondary Teachers – Non-mathematics – 4.5 CEUs

Six Traits: Assessing & Teaching Writing (45 hours)

 

Secondary Mathematics Teachers – 3.0 CEUs

Teaching Mathematics with the Common Core (15 hours)

and

Teaching Content Area Literacy with the Common Core(15 hours)

 

Elementary Teachers – 3.0 CEUs

Teaching English Language Arts with the Common Core (15 hours)

and

Teaching Mathematics with the Common Core (15 hours)

 

ONLINE COURSE OPTION

Please note the following:

1.  In early September, 2013, all DPS teachers will receive an email from SAM Connect [do-not-reply@scholastic.com] and the subject line will be: You Now Have Access to Scholastic U.

2.  Teachers who opt to complete the online course should use this information to access your respective Scholastic U course, as identified below. 

3.  Teachers must register in MyLearningPlan®.

**Schools may attend sessions for the other calendar, with principal’s approval and support; that is, a year-round teacher may attend a session on a traditional workday, or vice versa.  Schools are responsible for securing substitute teachers or class coverage.  If this option is favorable, it is recommended that one substitute teacher is used to cover one teacher for the morning session and another teacher for the afternoon session.
