Durham Public Schools has approved three research based social emotional learning curriculum for use in our schools. Per our DPS 2023-2028 Strategic Plan, all schools are expected to fully implement one of the following SEL curriculum. Full implementation of the SEL curriculum requires all students to receive the SEL lessons facilitated by classroom teachers. The SEL lessons should occur at least 15 minutes a day for elementary and 45 minutes a week for secondary schools. Lastly, the lessons must be from one of the following DPS approved curriculum: Character Strong, Move This World, or ReThink Ed.
Durham Public Schools requires each school to adopt an evidence-based cultural framework. A cultural framework is intended to install a standard way to approach the overall climate and culture of a school. Climate can be thought of as “how we do things around here” or the quality and character of school life. Culture can be thought of as“how it feels around here” or the guiding beliefs and values evident in the way a school operates.
Durham Public Schools implements Restorative Practices as a district-wide approach to Climate and Culture. The Restorative Practices framework should include proactive steps to build community such as proactive/community building/tier one circles in every classroom and use of affective language (I statements) by all staff. In addition, the Restorative Practices framework includes ways to repair relationships and reintegrate students into the school community when harm may have occurred. These strategies include restorative chats, restorative circles and reintegration/reentry circles and conferences. It is important to note that DPS supports this Restorative Practices framework to be used for students and staff. The DPS Restorative Practices Handbook gives a brief overview of implementation of Restorative Practices in DPS but full training is available from the District Restorative Practices Leadership Team. For information regarding training please contact amy_miller@dpsnc.net.
Some schools have selected a specific program to build culture and climate in their schools in addition to a Restorative Practices framework. The Student Support Services department provides support for Capturing Kids Hearts as a way to enhance schools’ cultural framework implementation. Some schools also have integrated Responsive Classrooms and Leader in Me as additional climate support programs.
